A Beginner's Guide to Diffusing

Diffusing essential oils is the easiest way to bring scent into a room without candles, sprays or hot flames. A small ultrasonic diffuser turns a few drops of oil and a tank of water into a fine, cool mist that carries the aroma through the space. There is no combustion, no wax, no soot, just water and plant oil.

If you have never diffused before, start with a small diffuser (200 to 300ml tank) and place it on a hard surface, roughly at chest height, in the room you actually spend time in. Living rooms, bedrooms and studies work well. Kitchens and bathrooms are lovely too, but the air moves quickly, so you'll want to close the door for a few minutes to let the scent build.

How many drops

For a 200ml tank, three to five drops of a single-note oil is a sensible starting place. Lavender and sweet orange are gentle and forgiving. Peppermint and eucalyptus are more assertive, start with two or three drops and add more only if you want a stronger note. There is no reward for over-dosing the tank; the scent doesn't get better, it just gets heavier.

Blending

Once you are comfortable with single notes, try short two-oil blends. Lavender plus sweet orange makes a soft, warm evening scent. Peppermint plus lemon is a bright morning wake-up. Tea tree plus lemon reads like a freshly-cleaned kitchen. Keep the total drop count the same, five drops split two to three is plenty.

When to diffuse (and when to stop)

Aim for 30 to 60 minutes at a time, then let the room rest. Most modern diffusers have a timer built in for exactly this reason. Continuous running all day is unnecessary, uses more oil, and can make the scent feel flat because your nose adapts.

Care and cleaning

Empty and wipe the tank between different oils to avoid muddled blends. Once a fortnight, run the diffuser with a little white vinegar and water to keep the ultrasonic disc clean. A clean diffuser makes a noticeable difference to the quality of the mist.

The mistakes worth skipping

Two things to avoid: filling the tank past the max line (it splutters and struggles), and diffusing in a very small closed room for hours on end. Ventilation is your friend, a cracked door or window keeps the scent fresh rather than heavy.

That is really the whole beginner's playbook. Small diffuser, a few drops of a single-origin oil, thirty minutes at a time, a clean tank. Everything else is preference.
